I would like to take the opportunity to respond to an article that was published in the Gleaner on September 18, 2020, titled Nurse Schooling in Disarray….

I vehemently disagree with this broad brush of PN schools! I am a Practical Nurse (PN) and I did my course at the Spanish Town Learning Institute, located at 55 Brunswick Avenue in Spanish Town, Jamaica, operated by Mrs. P. Morgan. I have worked in Jamaica and now am overseas still blazing the trail. I am proud to say that the school has produced well-rounded professionals in this area of career choice. No one is allowed to graduate without first completing the syllabus. There are rigorous exams in place for every unit. Every skill essential for practical nursing is demonstrated effectively by carefully selected professionals and each student MUST return the demonstration in various scenarios presented to them.

For our internship, we were sent to various institutions including Nursing Homes, Clinics, Children’s Homes and Early Childhood Institutions. These institutions in return assessed us and reported back to the school. Everything necessary was evaluated and we were deemed to be head and shoulders above the rest. We also did an Introduction to Pharmacology and an Introduction to Early Childhood Education which helped a lot in dealing with children. Our external exams are offered by the National Council on Technical & Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) and City & Guilds, London. We are also CPR certified by The Jamaica Red Cross. Spanish Town Learning Institute is the best!!!!

At the tender age of 16 years in September of 1997 fresh out of high school, I enrolled at the Spanish Town School of Vocational Health Care (now known as Spanish Town Learning Institute). The reason for my enrollment was to pursue the Licensed Practical Nursing course. Little did I know that I was amongst the trendsetters, as our batch was actually the first set of students to walk through the gate.

This has proven to be the most defining experience as it paved the way for my nursing career. The training received was beyond expectations and was non-comparable to other similar institutions. SLI was, and still is, a cut above the rest (and I do mean a major cut ). Standards set by our Principal, Mrs. Phyllis Morgan, were very high and she always instilled in us the need to strive for our greatest potential. Her God-fearing, selfless, disciplined, and no non-sense attitude played major role in shaping us as individuals and valuable members of the health care industry. Because of her guidance and example, we received first-hand knowledge and experience of what it means to be effective caregivers who not only cared superficially but genuinely from the heart. She taught us that nursing is indeed a calling; this I have proven over and over again throughout my career.

The experience gained at SLI certainly motivated me to continue striving for my goals and advancing my way up the ladder of nursing. Since leaving SLI, I completed the Registered General Nursing program at University Hospital of the West Indies School of Nursing (now UWISON). I worked as an RN for eight years. Thanks to my experience at SLI, I literally breezed through the first year of nursing school. This goes to show the caliber of teaching I received at SLI. I later pursued the Registered Midwife program at the Cornwall School of Midwifery. I functioned as a Registered Nurse Midwife for six years before sitting the NCLEX examination and migrating to the United States in 2018. Being a nurse in the US has been quite an eye-opener for me and I give credit to the foundation that was laid at SLI because it has certainly shaped who I am as a nurse, the impact I make on patients’ lives and the quality of care that I insist on giving my patients even when colleagues refuse to do so. The education I received at SLI has gone a far way in parachuting my whole life’s experience and career as a whole. I stand by the firm belief that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to; this I also learnt from Mrs. Morgan who always held us accountable for maintaining the highest standards possible.

Today, I can lift my hands and my hat and applaud SLI for having such a profound and lasting impact on my life and my career. I would never trade this experience for anything in this world. To anyone out there interested in jump starting your nursing career, please know that SLI is the way to go. You will not regret making such a decision. SLI is the best and I say this from true experience and unwavering knowledge. To God be the glory, great things He has done. I wish for SLI all the success possible.

As a young adult, I could not decide what I wanted to do with my life. I was told that there was an early childhood course being offered at a school on Brunswick Avenue that would give me a start in the right direction since I had nothing else to do at the time. I decided to try it out and went to Spanish Town School of Vocational Health Care (now Spanish Town Learning Institute, SLI) and registered for their summer programme in Early Childhood Education.

My facilitators introduced me to what would become a lifelong dream.  I quickly learned everything I could as, although a short programme, it was intensive and comprehensive.  At the end of the course, I was sent  by Mrs. Morgan to The Children’s Centre on work experience. The love and attention I received from teachers and staff members at the then SSVHC,  made me wish the course was much longer.

Twenty five years later and I am still employed at The Children’s Centre, where I now work in the capacity as principal.  I continued my studies and obtained my Diploma in Early Childhood Education, but it was the foundation I got at the now Spanish Town Learning Institute that ignited the passion in me for teaching.

Thanks to Spanish Town Learning Institute for the hard work you continue to do in equipping men and women, like myself, to realize their full potential.

Over the years I have had many nursing students rotate through my practice from the Spanish Town Learning Institute. These students have always been cordial, well attired and hard working. I am pleased with the training they have received and have personally employed a few to fill temporary positions as they arise.

For several years, City Medical Center has had the opportunity to accommodate practical nursing students that have been trained by different institutions in Jamaica.

There have been numerous occasions that we have accommodated students from the Spanish Town Learning Institute. The consistency in the deportment, mannerisms, professionalism and theoretical knowledge of the students that we have experienced has been generally impressive over the years. The evaluation at the end of their practical experience has been primarily good and their willingness and enthusiasm to learn has been admirable.

We are always willing to accept practical nursing students from Spanish Town Learning Institute at City Medical Center because of the ease with which they adopt. Commendations are to be given to the administrators of the Spanish Town Learning Institute.

My name is Peacheslyn Treasure. The day I decided to attend the Spanish Town School of Vocational of Vocational Health Care (SSVHC) now known as Spanish Town Learning Institute (SLI), was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The teachers were awesome and what I learnt there gave me the tools to function exceptionally well at all the places I have worked so far including overseas. Mrs. Morgan instilled in us the value of treating people the way we would like to be treated. I migrated to the USA, had to do their course here, and I was top of my class when I did the State Exam. I passed with flying colors. I was given an hour and a half to do the exam and I was done in 20 minutes; that`s because I got great training from back home. Mrs. Morgan would not move to another topic if we did not understand. Her favorite phrase was “let me backtrack a little.” I will continue to proudly recommend the Spanish Town Learning Institute to anyone who is looking for a great Practical Nursing School to attend.

I, Simone Branford, is a proud past student of the Spanish Town Learning Institute, formerly known as the Spanish Town School of Vocational Health Care. I would recommend everyone to enroll in this institution where you will be introduced to not only basic nursing skills, but life skills that will eventually become a lifestyle. We had excellent teachers and gained hands-on training to last us for a life time, as mentioned earlier. It is the best nursing school in Jamaica as far as I am concerned with 100% pass rate.
