Spanish Town Learning Institute - Overview
Spanish Town Learning Institute (SLI) was founded in 1997, then Spanish Town School of Vocational Health Care (SSVHC). SLI is now a co-educational, multi-disciplinary day and evening institute that is registered with the Ministry of Education, Independent Schools and approved by the National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) and City & Guilds, London.
Our institution has three departments which include:
- A General Department that offers Certificate and Diploma courses in Vocational Nursing (Practical Nursing – Levels 1-3, Geriatric Nursing: Basic and Level 2); Early Childhood Education – Levels 1-3, Introduction to Information Technology, Phlebotomy, Child Care, Business Studies, Housekeeping and ECG Technician (pending). Other courses will be added to our suite of programmes from time to time, as seen fit. There is also a pre-course programme (remedial English and Math) for those persons wanting to qualify to pursue any of our courses or those who just need remedial help in these areas.
- A Department of Continuing Education where we offer mostly post basic courses in An Introduction to Psychiatric Nursing, Psychiatric Aide, The Practical Nurse as a Leader, and other courses that will be added to our suite of courses as the need arise.
- A Placement Agency which functions as an adjunct to SLI and is currently not for profit. As a service to our graduates, we deem it a pleasure to assist with job placement opportunities. This has been relatively easy for us as over the years, many employers seek us out when they need well-trained personnel. Graduates are however encouraged to actively assist in the process of job attainment.
For all our suite of courses, offerings are both on-line and face to face. Subjects are offered with many of our courses.
What makes SLI different from most training institutions?
- The emphasis and priority given to quality education and training (no gimmicks) and a high employment rate after graduation, say it all.
- Courses offered, and certification obtained, are at national and international standards, and as such, graduates are eligible to work both locally and internationally and perform with distinction wherever they go. This is based on positive feedback received from both employers and graduates.
- Our graduates are sought after; they are devoted to improving the quality of life for all clients/patients/residents; they gain respect of employers and co-workers, and experience personal satisfaction.
- SLI is guided by strong principles, good ethics, high standards and professionalism and integrity; always with our trainees’ best interest in mind.
- Spanish Town Learning Institute is a viable option…and a precursor to further training in Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Medical Technology, and Information Technology, Business, and other sectors.
- It is said that when others lie down, SLI sit; when others sit, SLI stand; when others stand, SLI stand out; and that’s a fact!

Meet Our Founder
Mrs. Phyllis Morgan - The Embodiment of Excellence
Mrs. Phyllis Morgan, Founder of Spanish Town Learning Institute is a registered nurse, registered midwife who has done postgraduate courses in nursing administration, ECG, neonatology and computer.
She worked in the government service as a Sister for many years at various government hospitals before moving on to industrial nursing, at JAMALCO, Halse Hall, where she worked for seven (7) years.
It was while working at one of the hospitals that Mrs. Morgan, upon observing the performance of allied health care workers, decided that one day she would make a difference by offering quality education and training that would meet and exceed the standards required.
In 1997, that became a reality when she founded Spanish Town Learning Institute (SLI) formerly Spanish Town School of Vocational Health Care (SSVHC).
Mrs. Morgan is a stickler for excellence and maintains a high standard in all she does. She is dedicated, thorough, a disciplinarian, an excellent educator with unique teaching styles. She is a devout Christian who believes firmly that God who is a God of excellence empowers us to be the best that we can be. She demands that same level of dedication and excellence from the persons she employs to ensure that her trainees receive the best education possible so they can function at the highest level possible in any setting, locally or internationally, and gain the respect of those they serve. Mrs. Morgan also expects her trainees to be equally passionate about learning, and consistently pushes them to extend themselves to attain their highest potential.
For her, only the best is good enough!
